Scavino was one of the original Barolo boys, but focussed more on improving vineyard and winery practices than using lots of oak. This spent 10mos in barrique, and finished off in 50hl casks. Drinking the 2011 and 2013 next to each other and it’s quite a contrast. This is soft and approachable. My last bottle in 2019 was all fruit and liquorice, but now it’s delicate with soft fruit and lots of floral scents. This really has matured into a …

~4 hours in the decanter. Still quite primary though this is nicely balanced and approachable, just showing on the simpler side now. Good freshness to the fruit. Should hit a peak zone in 5-7 years.

Medium-deep ruby red in color with no signs of aging. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries & cranberries with overtones of floral notes of roses, earthy/dusty, minerals, orange peel, spices, sandalwood, herbs & a hint of tar. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, strawberries & cranberries with herbs, minerals & spices. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well with decanting & extended airing & …

Decent mid-range barolo. Drank 1/2, then the remainder 2 days later - didn't add any body or develop meaningfully. Not unexpected for a hot vintage, but disappointing by comparison to how other comparably priced 2011 boroli have developed.

Annual Pilgrimage to Piedmont - 2019 Edition; 10/17/2019-10/20/2019 (Piedmont, Italy) : Stole a small glass from ristorante 21.9 , Alba where they had this by the glass. Another interesting approachable 2011 and seems at this stage 2011s are wines for the modernists where the use of oak and selection helped create approachable wines ( we had a great experience with a magnum of Ellio Grasso’s Casa Mate 2011 2 yrs ago - Papies 92). Granted a touch on the dry …

First impressions is of a more delicate style Barolo. Long lingering finish with a sweet edge. Cherry and berry flavors, but soft. I sense secondary notes trying to come out, but still a little subdued

Very much an iron fist in a velvet glove. So much perfume and complexities but still rustic and a wall of tannins. One of my favorite wines of the tasting.

Vivacious, bordering on seductive, bouquet of red fruits and flowers. Open and appealing on the palate, yet packing stalwart acid and tannic structure. It has the stuffing to age for 12 to 15 years. Approachable with a long decant.

2011 Barolo peek (Chicago, IL) : (Opened and poured into a decanter about an hour before serving.) A bit darker and richer than most of the other wines tonight. The palate has a very modern look and feel to it (I don't mean oak, but more of a sleek and stylish quality). My understanding is that the wine sees a series of barriques of varying ages (on average three years). Medium acids and soft tannins, but the palate does show …

Sneak Peak of 2011 Barolo (Chez Keith) : A big and concentrated nose that is brooding and non-delineated now -- red fruit, spice with a touch of vanilla cream. On the palate this has good concentration and polished fruit with chalky tannin. Lots of promising raw material and a touch of modernity (I believe this sees on average 3 year old wood) but not overblown. Picked up depth and complexity with time. Upside from here. Decanted for ~2 hours before …

A look into some 2011 Barolos (My place, Chicago IL) : Nose: The nose was somewhat brooding and dark with dark red cherries, licorice, mint, dark red berries, asian spices, and some roasted herbs. The nose was also wound up a bit as it didn't have that much air to it. Taste: Medium/full bodied with high acidity and dense tannins. The structure was a bit unforgiving though there is a dark and alluring feel underneath with asian spices, dark red …

What an incredible bouquet on the Scavino Monvigliero, here I found lifted red fruits, pine nettle, rose, sweet herbs and hints of orange peel. The longer it sat in the glass, the richer and sweeter its aromas seemed to become. On the palate, rich dark red fruits were ushered in by silky-weighted textures, followed by mineral and herbal tones. Fine tannin coated the senses throughout the finish as notes of dried red fruits lasted long.

Sweeter and more Morello cherry fruit than the AMbriogio still. Supposedly the cool cru now. It’s the Grand Cru of its region (which I doubt that its worthy of that but that doesn’t mean its not super good). Worked with this vineyard since 2000. Less than half a hectare and higher in altitude. This cru is warmer during the day but much cooler at night because of the river influence. More “sharp elements” I am being told. White stone fruit …

VinItaly Day 4 (Verona, Italy) : Brick core, lighter rim; cherry, dried rose, a little linear in the nose, warmer; firmer and more linear on the palate too, sharp acid, firm tannin, iron; very different from other 2011 Barolos in their lineup.
