Craggy Range, Te Muna Road Vineyard Pinot Noir, Martinborough

No disappointment here! Gifted a bottle for doing a big favour and made it a celebration bottle for Christmas. Smooth and full of body, with pepper and iron and earthy tones with the berry notes and the (first time) hawthorn flavours that others have detected. A very good drop and in 2018 a wonderful wine, disregard the "best before 2016"

Popped and poured. Darker ruby. Nose of anise, forest floor, raspberry, floral notes. Layers of black raspberry, cherry, and dark plum on the palate laced with a streak of mushroom and game sustained all the way through to the finish. Very good acidity and serious tannins. Long finish of brambles, dark fruit, and earth. Bigger wine than the 2011. Impressive bottling which already exhibits some degree of complexity, caught quite young.

Bright red in color, this wine revealed smoke, strawberry, red cherry and cranberry on the nose. The mouth feel was rich with added notes of raspberry, soil driven minerals and touches of sweetness. Decanted for an hour. Tart red cherries, white flowers, gravel, Pinot funk and a bit of heat on the nose. Sour cherry flavor is dominant on the palate, with some funk and spice. Light colored, as a Pinot Noir should be Nose with floral notes, smoky red fruit Palate has white flowers, fresh yet savory strawberries, light body and tannins, medium fruit acid, finish is somewhat savory with dark red fruit, and lasts for 10-20 seconds Overall - the wine evolves quite a bit throughout the evening losing some of its freshness and becoming more Burgundian with forest floor funk coming thru. Je ne bois pas souvent ce genre de vin, mais j'ai trouvé ce pinot néo-zélandais très intéressant. ni bourguignon ni californien sur la plan stylistique. Beau fruité éclatant avec un noble végétal. Brilliant and popping acidity, with a shimmering presence. Red raspberry, baked brick, oyster shell, root beer and cumin. Savory and focused, this will age and develop more over time, yet, one could consume now with a big smile. Not as fat as the '08', this is more laser-guided, with definition and grace. Concentrated dark fruit nose with slight red berry brightness coming through. Sour cherry to blueberry to cranberry. Blue flowers, salt liquorice, charcoal and rubbery oak toast. Medium bodied and supple, chewy palate with balanced acidity and ripe red to dark berry fruit. Minerality, graphite, milky touch and dusty wood. Mid-length. Well, I don't know. Perhaps this just needs time to find focus. Perhaps.

Excellent aged Martinborough style. Horse manure and sweet raspberries. Good presence, excellent length and complexity. These wines do mature and develop well. Drunk a day after we drove through the Te Muna Road vineyards, Great drinking now but will hold and continue to develop.

This was a bit all over the place. Definite bricking of colour. The nose didn't offer much more than alcohol and some spiciness. 92-. Deliciously ripe and sweet pinot fruit. Cherry, strawberry and plum framed by earth, spice, and hints of smoke, bitter chocolate (or coffee) and toast. On open - concentrated (jammy) nose of dried cherries, plum, rose, with hints of musk (and smoke?). After an hour or two, a much more earthy nose with musk and game much more prevalent. Palate: medium mouthfeel, velvety sour cherry with spice, black pepper. Very velevety, supple tannins. Nicely balanced. Medium finish. Light cherry/garnet. Nose of judicious warm oak, red berries, cherry cola, hints of licorice and black pepper, and a slight vegetal note. NobleRottersSydney - Christmas Lunch 2006 (David's place) : "Totara Block" - {14%, cork} Intriguing garnet/mahogany colour. Earthy but complex fungal/farmyard nose, but not faulty in any way. Positively burgundian, in fact. A sophisticated palate of spicy pinot fruit, terrific balance, persistent acid, long dry finish. Very classy wine. Great stuff.
