I read that the 2004 Shiraz 'H.J. Reserve' was sourced from the estate's 65-year-old vineyard with a minuscule yield of 1 ton per acre and aged for two years in 100% new French oak. This wine is still extremely youthful and has barely aged. Minimal bricking around the edges. Still strong oak and tannins have a bit of bite to them. Definitely benefits from being decanted for a few days right now. Overall, very high quality fruit. Lots of red & black fruit and pepper. Excellent McLaren Vale shiraz. Inky ruby color. Full bodied. Drinkable right now, but my hunch is that it won't peak for 10 more years.

A supposingly big and voluptuous Shiraz aged for 2 years in 100% new French oak. Dark and inky core with garnet hues. Dumb nose; huge wine, very syrupy; too intense to get much sense of. A big (too big??) Mclaren vale shiraz. tasted over four nights. By day three was beginning to open open and structure more visible, as were tannins. I will leave five years before trying again.

Alcohol: 14.5% A big boy from McLaren Vale. Dark fruits, spice, leather and mineral and dark chocolate aromas. Very powerful and concentrated palate of savory meat, mineral, lots of dark fruits with spice, finish with silght heat and bitter dark chocolate. Still young. . Not bad and not a full fruit bomb. Just not my style of Shiraz, skip.

On tasting, this had blackberries and a lot of oomph…too much at the moment. However, being an 04, this has years to go developing in the bottle.
