Kongsgaard, Viognier, Napa Valley

While I drink an awesome amount of wine (my doc says too much), I rarely post notes here. But the prior comment is I think wholly off the mark. While I also loved the vio/Rous mix, this straight viognier is delightful, has plenty of acidity and if it weren't for a touch of alc heat, I might even give this a 95. If you like viognier, this is the grape California style, with superb concentration and complexity.

I have tremendously enjoyed the past few vintages of the Kongsgaard Viorous (which is about 2/3rds Viognier, 1/3rd Roussanne), so while I knew this would be different, I thought it would be great to see the viognier in all its glory. Instead, I was surprised how much "simpler" this was, and how much I missed the acidity that I guess the roussanne was providing. It also finished with a slightly rough, rubbing alcohol finish that the wonderful aromatics couldn't cover. …

This wine is insane and intense. There is an excellent marriage of pine, donut peach, and lychee with drying tannins and oak density. It's like a Kongsgaard Chardonnay went for a walk with a bunch of orchard-ripened peaches. Wild. Awesome. Unusual. Worth seeking out.
